ELTOSAI Logistics Guide
Shipping from China to Mexico
Updated October 2026 · By the ELTOSAI brokerage team
China to Mexico is one of the fastest-growing container lanes in the world. Chinese manufacturers investing in Mexico, nearshoring supply chains, and direct e-commerce flows have pushed Asia–Mexico volumes to record levels, and carriers have responded with dedicated services: direct sailings from Shanghai, Ningbo, Shenzhen and Qingdao to Manzanillo and Lazaro Cardenas now run weekly.
This guide covers the lane the way a forwarder sees it: which mode fits which cargo, what ocean and air actually cost right now, which ports to use, and how Mexican customs treats Chinese-origin goods. Use it to plan; request a quote when you want a live rate.
| Mode | Reference rate | Port-to-port transit |
|---|---|---|
| Ocean FCL 40ft | $3,650 to $5,550 | 18 to 25 days |
| Ocean FCL 20ft | $2,850 to $4,050 | 18 to 25 days |
| Ocean LCL | $180 to $250 per CBM | 25 to 35 days |
| Air freight (100+ kg) | $4.50 to $6.70 per kg | 3 to 7 days |
| Express courier | $10 to $15 per kg | 2 to 4 days |
Indicative market ranges for 2026, port to port. Rates move with season, carrier and exact port pair. Door-to-door adds origin handling, customs and inland delivery.
Ocean freight: the default for volume
Most China to Mexico cargo moves by ocean. Direct services connect Shanghai, Ningbo and Shenzhen/Shekou to Manzanillo in 18 to 25 days port to port; services via Busan or with additional calls run 25 to 30 days. Qingdao to Manzanillo on the newer direct strings runs about 20 days. Lazaro Cardenas receives several Asia services and works well for cargo bound for central Mexico.
Full container load (FCL) is the economical choice from about 15 CBM upward. A 40ft container from Shanghai to Manzanillo is currently quoted in the $3,650 to $5,550 range all-in port to port, depending on carrier, season and surcharges. Less-than-container-load (LCL) runs $180 to $250 per CBM and makes sense under 10 to 12 CBM, though consolidation adds a week or more to the total transit.
Peak season on this lane runs August through November, ahead of year-end retail and manufacturing cycles. Book 2 to 3 weeks ahead in peak; rollovers (containers bumped to the next sailing) are the main risk of late booking.
Air freight and express
Air freight from Shanghai (PVG), Shenzhen (SZX) or Beijing to Mexico City (AICM) or Guadalajara runs 3 to 7 days door to door for most shipments. Rates for 100 kg and up sit around $4.50 to $6.70 per kg, charged on the greater of actual and volumetric weight (length x width x height in cm divided by 6,000).
Use air for high-value electronics, urgent production components, and product launches where a week of ocean delay costs more than the freight premium. Express couriers (2 to 4 days, $10 to $15 per kg) fit samples, documents and small urgent parcels. Note that express and air both clear Mexican customs: speed at the airport still depends on your documents being pre-filed.
- Air freight: $4.50 to $6.70/kg for 100+ kg, 3 to 7 days door to door
- Chargeable weight: max(actual kg, volumetric kg). Pack dense
- Express: 2 to 4 days for parcels and samples
- Both modes need the same customs documents as ocean
Which Mexican port: Manzanillo or Lazaro Cardenas
Manzanillo is Mexico's busiest Pacific container port and the default gateway for Asia-origin freight, with the most direct services and the deepest pool of trucking and warehousing around it. Lazaro Cardenas is the alternative: slightly less congested at peak, with good rail and highway connections into the Bajio and Mexico City.
Choose by inland destination as much as by ocean transit. Freight for Guadalajara, the Bajio or northern distribution often clears faster through Lazaro Cardenas; freight for Mexico City works through either. Your forwarder should quote both gateways and show you the landed-cost difference, not just the ocean rate.
Mexican customs for Chinese-origin goods
Every shipment needs a licensed agente aduanal to file the pedimento, Mexico's customs declaration. Beyond the standard process, Chinese-origin goods face additional scrutiny in specific categories: Mexico applies temporary additional tariffs (up to 35%) on textiles, footwear, steel and several other Chinese-origin product lines. These decrees change periodically, so verify the current rate for your tariff code before you cost the shipment.
Standard import costs: the general import duty (IGI) per your fracción arancelaria, 16% IVA on the customs value plus duties, and the customs processing fee (DTA). NOM standards apply to regulated products (electronics, textiles, toys and others): NOM compliance cannot be fixed after arrival, so certify before you ship.
- Pedimento filed by a licensed agente aduanal (mandatory)
- Temporary tariffs up to 35% on certain Chinese-origin categories: verify current rates
- 16% IVA on customs value plus duties
- NOM certification before shipment for regulated goods
- Importer of record: RFC plus Padron de Importadores, or your forwarder's IOR service
Door-to-door: what the full move looks like
A complete China to Mexico move has five cost blocks: origin handling and export clearance in China, international freight, destination port charges in Mexico, customs brokerage and duties/taxes, and inland delivery to your plant, warehouse or fulfillment center. Quotes that show only the ocean rate are hiding more than half the story.
As a forwarder we quote and manage all five under one contract: one rate, one responsible party, milestone tracking from factory pickup to final delivery, and re-export onward to the US or Latin America when Mexico is your hub rather than your destination.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to ship from China to Mexico by sea?
Port to port, 18 to 25 days on direct services from Shanghai, Ningbo or Shenzhen to Manzanillo; up to 30 days on services with additional calls. Door to door, plan 25 to 35 days including origin handling, customs and inland delivery.
How much does it cost to ship a 40ft container from China to Mexico?
In 2026, a 40ft container from Shanghai to Manzanillo is typically quoted at $3,650 to $5,550 port to port, depending on carrier, season and surcharges. LCL runs $180 to $250 per CBM. These are market ranges: request a formal quote for a live rate on your dates.
What is the cheapest way to ship from China to Mexico?
Ocean FCL is cheapest per unit for volume over about 15 CBM. For smaller shipments, LCL or consolidated air can beat FCL. The real savings usually come from correct tariff classification and avoiding demurrage, not from chasing the lowest ocean rate.
Do I need a customs broker for imports from China to Mexico?
Yes. Mexican law requires a licensed agente aduanal to file the pedimento. Chinese-origin goods in regulated categories also need NOM certificates and may face additional temporary tariffs, so broker selection matters more on this lane than most.
Which port should I use: Manzanillo or Lazaro Cardenas?
Manzanillo has the most direct Asia services and the deepest logistics ecosystem; Lazaro Cardenas is a strong alternative for the Bajio and central Mexico with less peak congestion. Quote both and compare landed cost, not just ocean freight.
Can I ship from China to Mexico DDP?
Yes. DDP (Delivered Duty Paid) quotes bundle freight, Mexican customs brokerage, duties and taxes into one price. It is the simplest option for shippers without a Mexican entity, and it is how most of our China-origin clients buy the lane.
