FCL (Full Container Load): Definition and When to Use It

Updated October 2026 · By the ELTOSAI brokerage team

FCL (Full Container Load) means you book an entire shipping container for your cargo alone, typically a 20ft or 40ft box. You pay for the container, not by weight or volume, and your goods are the only ones inside from origin to destination.

When FCL makes sense

FCL becomes economical at roughly 15 CBM of cargo or above: beyond that point, paying for the whole box costs less per unit than sharing one. It is also faster than LCL because there is no consolidation or deconsolidation at either end, and it is more secure since the container is sealed at origin and opened at destination.

A standard 40ft container holds about 67 CBM or up to roughly 26,000 kg of cargo (weight limits vary by route and carrier). A 20ft holds about 33 CBM.

FCL into Mexico

On Asia–Mexico lanes, FCL is the default for importers with steady volume: weekly sailings from Shanghai, Ningbo, Busan and Yokohama to Manzanillo and Lazaro Cardenas make FCL planning straightforward. Your forwarder should quote the all-in landed cost (ocean plus destination charges plus inland), not just the port-to-port rate.

  • Economical above ~15 CBM; the standard for regular importers
  • Sealed at origin, opened at destination: fewer handling risks
  • No consolidation delays versus LCL
  • Quote all-in landed cost, not just the ocean leg

Frequently asked questions

What does FCL mean in shipping?

Full Container Load: you rent an entire container (usually 20ft or 40ft) for your cargo alone. You pay a flat rate for the box regardless of how full it is.

When is FCL cheaper than LCL?

Generally above 15 CBM of cargo. Below that, LCL (sharing a container) usually costs less, though it is slower due to consolidation.

How much cargo fits in a 40ft container?

About 67 CBM of volume or up to roughly 26,000 kg, subject to route and carrier weight limits.
