LCL (Less than Container Load): Definition, Costs and Transit
Updated October 2026 · By the ELTOSAI brokerage team
LCL (Less than Container Load) means your cargo shares a container with other shippers' goods. A consolidator groups multiple LCL shipments into one full container at origin and splits them apart at destination. You pay per cubic meter (CBM) or per 1,000 kg, whichever is greater.
How LCL pricing works
LCL is quoted per CBM with a minimum (usually 1 CBM). On China–Mexico lanes, rates run roughly $180 to $250 per CBM port to port, plus origin and destination handling charges per shipment ($150 to $400 each side is typical). Because of those fixed handling fees, tiny shipments can cost more per unit than the per-CBM rate suggests.
The breakeven against FCL sits around 12 to 15 CBM: above that, a full container usually wins on cost.
The transit tradeoff
LCL is slower than FCL. Consolidation at origin and deconsolidation at destination each add several days, and LCL containers are typically loaded last and unloaded first only in theory. Plan 25 to 35 days port to port on Asia–Mexico LCL versus 18 to 25 for FCL on the same lane.
Direct LCL services (such as Busan to Manzanillo) cut about a week versus LCL routed through transshipment hubs. If your forwarder offers a direct consolidation, take it.
- Priced per CBM (or per 1,000 kg), minimum 1 CBM
- Fixed handling fees per shipment on top of the per-CBM rate
- Slower than FCL: plan extra 7 to 10 days
- Direct consolidations beat hub-routed LCL on speed
Frequently asked questions
What does LCL mean in shipping?
Less than Container Load: your goods share a container with other shippers. You pay per cubic meter rather than for a whole container.
Is LCL cheaper than FCL?
For shipments under about 12 to 15 CBM, usually yes. Above that, FCL normally costs less per unit and moves faster.
How long does LCL take from China to Mexico?
Typically 25 to 35 days port to port, versus 18 to 25 for FCL, because of consolidation and deconsolidation handling at both ends.
